M-10 Suspension Failure Poll

Hey guys - below is a letter that I wrote to the editors of each of the major magazines as well as Polaris.  I wanted to see if anyone has had this issue with the M-10 suspensions.  After sending this, SnowTech Mag was the only one to get back to me, saying that he experienced a similar issue and it may have been to a bad center shock that ingested moisture and froze -therefore putting more strain on the torque arm.  Anyway, I want to get the word out.   Hello, I want to draw attention to an issue with the Polaris (not FAST aftermarket) made M-10 suspensions of the past couple years.  A riding friend of mine has an ’06 Polaris FST Classic (the one-up version) with the M-10 and my mother as an ’07 600 IQ LX with the M-10.  Last season my mother was traveling at about 35mph down a smooth road when without warning, the track ripped completely in half (width wise) and she was ejected from the sled over the handlebars, while the track was thrown out the back of the sled.  On the exact same day in a different area of Old Forge, my friend was traveling through a very twisty section (and probably traveling at only 5-10 mph – thankfully) when her track locked up and she was thrown into the handlebars.  The track did not rip in this case because she not going fast at the time. After getting back to the cabin and rehashing the day’s events, we were looking at the suspensions and what caused the tracks to abrubtly become jammed and/or rip.  The Front Torque Arm of the rear suspension snapped in the exact same spot.  And the only reason why the other track didn’t rip was the fact that she was not going fast when this happened. We later found out that my friends dealer had repaired at least one (possibly two) other M-10 suspensioned sleds with in the last year. We deal with different dealers in our local area here in southeastern PA.  Our dealer, Moyer’s Outdoor Power Equipment, was great in going to bat for us when when we brought the issue up to Polaris.  They claimed they never heard of this problem happening prior, and when we mentioned of the other situations (just locally from what we knew of) and mentioned the potential safety concerns that we had, they agreed that everything would be taken care of, including the track and the rebuild of the rear susupension.   Apparantly, it was a bad weld on that Front Torque Arm, and when it snapped, the tension that the arm was under spun the arm up and created a wedge, which stopped the track (and ripped the track on my mothers sled).  Polaris has covered the repairs, but the safety issue is more of a concern. I’m concerned because I’ve not heard of any widespread recalls on this.  Anyone who is riding one of the Classic or LX sleds in the past few years should be aware of this and check with your dealer of any updates or recalls.  Obviously, the concern is losing a track at trail speeds, and loosing control of the sled is could be a very serious situation.  Thankfully, of the known issues there were no serious injuries, just a few bruises and a headache – my mother was tossed so hard that is cracked her helmet, but she was fine.
